The Senate Finance Committee approved its version of government-run health care along mostly party lines by a vote of 14-9. Sen. Olympia Snowe (ME) is the only Republican on the panel who voted for the Baucus bill. Now, the real work begins on Capitol Hill as the focus turns to both the floor of the Senate and House where final legislative action will occur.
House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid will be working to mold the five versions of the bill into one final package for consideration on both the House and Senate floor. Because our efforts to improve the legislation have been specifically rejected, we are left with no choice but to oppose the entire package.
We will be focusing our efforts on a number of fronts:
First, we will be standing with 183 Members of the House of Representatives who sent this letter to Speaker Pelosi demanding a full vote of the House on the abortion-related measures in the bill. We will also be calling for opposition to the underlying bill. In the Senate, we continue to oppose the entire bill and highlight the fact that the Senate Finance Committee approved a bill before it is even written.
In both chambers, we are demanding that the final legislation be available for reading at least 72 hours before it is voted on. It is unconscionable that our highest legislative bodies are acting on such sweeping legislation without adequate opportunity to understand what is in it.
This is the time to stand with the ACLJ. The massive government takeover that is being masqueraded as health care reform is nearing enactment. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that you stand with us in opposition to this legislation.
