In Focus: The Issue of Life
|
The behind-the-scenes attacks on life continue to escalate in Washington. With Congress taking a holiday break, there's growing concern that President Obama will use Congress’ absence to further advance his pro-abortion ideology. This concern centers around the nomination of Dawn Johnsen to the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice (DOJ). As many of you know, Johnson was formerly a senior employee at NARAL and holds an extreme view favoring abortions in virtually all situations and under any circumstance. It is particularly troubling that such an outspoken opponent of life would be nominated to a post responsible for the legal practices of the DOJ. This most recent concern comes on the heels of the good news that the Senate does not have the votes necessary to confirm Johnsen. However, there are reports that President Obama is considering what is called a “recess appointment” of Johnsen. This maneuver would bypass the Senate’s confirmation role and immediately install Johnsen to the DOJ post - an astonishing move since a majority of this liberal Senate considers Johnsen too radical for this post. Meanwhile, President Obama’s budget proposes to eliminate the prohibition of using taxpayer dollars directly for abortion in the District of Columbia. This provision, known as the Dornan Amendment, has been in place without interruption since 1996. By removing this provision, President Obama is authorizing our tax dollars to be used directly for abortions in our nation’s capital. It is an absolute affront to the American taxpayer, especially given that a majority of American people describe themselves as pro-life. We will strongly encourage Congress to reject President Obama’s proposal.
