Health Care & Abortion

For months now, we’ve been keeping you up to date on our concerns regarding the abortion ramifications within the pending government-run health care proposal. We’ve also been reminding you that this is not strictly a partisan issue, and that many pro-life Democrats have been standing with us. Never has that been more true than today, as 25 Democrats have joined with 158 Republicans in sending this letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rules Committee Chairman Louise Slaughter (D-NY).

In no uncertain terms, the letter demands that Speaker Pelosi and Chairman Slaughter allow a vote on the critical pro-life amendments that have thus far been rejected by the House Leadership. If these simple demands are not met, pro-life Members will be left with no recourse except to oppose bringing the entire bill to the Floor for a vote.

This broad support is critical, as it will take the help of pro-life Democrats to overcome the hard-line pro-abortion position of House Leadership. We will continue to support this bipartisan effort led by Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) and Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA).
