UPDATE: Pro-Life Amendment to Get Vote in Health Care Debate

I want to report to you very big news coming out of the House of Representatives representing a significant victory for pro-lifers across the nation.

In the overnight hours - late Friday and into early Saturday - the Democrat-controlled Rules Committee met to consider which amendments would be allowed to be introduced on the House Floor when the government takeover of health care is debated on Saturday.  As you know, we’ve been calling on you to stand with us in demanding a vote on the Stupak/Pitts Amendment, which would prohibit federal funding of abortions under the bill.  Speaker Pelosi and House Leadership had refused such a vote, but last night proved unable to round up the 218 votes needed to pass the bill without allowing a vote on the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.

As a result, the Rules Committee has authorized debate on just one amendment to the underlying bill, and that is the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.  This development is outstanding news, and it would not have happened without the support of the more than 168,000 of you who signed our petition opposing government-run health care and demanding that abortion coverage be stripped from the bill.

Now that a vote has been secured, we're now concentrating our efforts on the outcome of the vote on the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.  The vote is expected to be very close, and there are a number of Members of the House who will receive intense pressure to oppose the amendment.  We will be engaging these Members throughout the day.  A vote is expected either Saturday evening or Sunday.

While significant problems would remain in the bill even if the Stupak/Pitts Amendment is adopted, achieving debate on this amendment is a significant pro-life victory.  Now, in this critical hour, we must speak out for those unable to defend themselves and demand that the House stand with the nearly 70% of the American people who don’t want the federal government to subsidize abortion.

Please contact your House Member and urged them to vote "yes" on the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.  Contact information about your House Member is posted here.
